Welcome to The New Cancer Center

You don’t have to become a world traveler in your mission to find quality treatment for cancer. Self Regional Healthcare offers advanced cancer treatment close to home. State-of-the-art technologies are no longer reserved for select major medical centers. Self Regional has a powerful arsenal of weapons required by our patients and has put all of the elements in place for highly effective treatment.

Our approach brings together highly trained physicians and staff, sophisticated technology and compassionate care. Our goal is to provide personalized treatment within the hospital’s Cancer Center. Self Regional is committed to advancing treatment for all patients in our seven-county area. We have invested in the resources needed to achieve that goal. From leading-edge radiation equipment to clinical trials for the latest cancer drugs, we offer our patients the opportunity to remain close to home while battling the disease.

Every month, a group of physicians, hospital management and hospital employees come together to evaluate the performance of the Cancer Center, which is certified by the American College of Surgeons. In addition to the services provided at the center, we offer and coordinate community wellness and screening programs, home health and community-based hospice programs.

The Cancer Center provides access to support groups that bring together people affected by cancer. Through these groups, patients can share their experiences and find comfort in shared understanding.

Through the Tumor Board and the Cancer Registry, Self Regional stays informed about the various aspects of cancer treatment and the latest recommendations for new and improved care.

Patients need to obtain a referral from a primary care physician or other physicians to receive cancer treatment services at Self Regional.

New Cancer Center

The new Self Regional Cancer Center is a sanctuary where the body, mind and spirit are treated as one. All services are in one place, consolidating clinical areas into one center that features a calming, nature-inspired design combined with the state-of-the-art technology.

Features include:

Radiation Oncology

Radiation therapy is one of the most powerful tools for fighting cancer. Our Radiation Oncology department provides a wide spectrum of radiotherapy services. We’re equipped with two state-of-the-art linear accelerators and a superficial X-ray therapy unit. sWe offer advanced “Seed Therapy” for prostate cancer patients. IMRT technology, which provides precision in attacking cancer, has been added to our array of technology. John Funke, III., M.D., and Clint Wood, M.D., are our radiation oncologists.

Medical Oncology

The Cancer Center has expert hematologist/medical oncologists who are at the forefront of treatment and research and are continually involved in clinical trials. These physicians provide our patients a wide range of hematology/medical oncology and chemotherapy services. Lena Vician, M.D., Brain Hunis, M.D., and Joanna Metzner-Sadurski, M.D., are our medical oncologists. Self Regional Healthcare's Cancer Center has achieved QOPI® Certification by the Quality Oncology Practice Initiative, and is the first health system in the Lakelands to achieve QOPI certification, and one of just three certified practices in the state of South Carolina.

Surgical Oncology
Surgery often is the main weapon in the fight against cancer. It’s frequently used in conjunction with radiation therapy or chemotherapy. Our board-certified surgeons are prepared to help people with diagnoses such as cancer of the breast, lung, prostate, colon, bladder, head or neck.

Inpatient services
Patients requiring inpatient hospitalization receive skilled, compassionate care from our experienced nursing staff. These nurses collaborate closely with other members of our team to provide physical and emotional support to patients and their families.

Outpatient Infusion Therapy Center (chemotherapy)

Chemotherapy has become a mainstay of treatment for many kinds of cancer. To receive a course of chemotherapy, patients come to our Outpatient Infusion Therapy Center for treatment with cancer-fighting drugs and blood products. Our oncology-certified nurses administer highly advanced treatments along with a reassuring touch.

Ancillary Services

Our patients have access to a full range of laboratory, radiology, rehabilitation, pastoral care, nutritional and social services. These resources are critical parts of our goal to treat the whole person while fighting cancer in every way possible.

Prepared to treat you

Simply knowing advanced cancer treatment is close to home can go a long way in providing patients an optimistic outlook that is part of their healing. We concentrate on fighting cancers that commonly occur among people in our area.

Breast cancer

Self Regional has invested in highly advanced technology. We begin with sophisticated diagnostic tools such as advanced ultrasound biopsy techniques and mammographic stereotactic biopsy. At our Medical Imaging Center for Women, we routinely perform mammograms that are essential to early breast cancer detection.

Treatment options range from surgery to radiation therapy to chemotherapy. Surgery ranges from sentinal node biopsy that lets us conserve the breast to full mastectomy for breast removal when needed. Our team is also ready to perform reconstructive surgery.

Colon cancer

Our first priority with colon cancer is to detect it as early as possible and prevent its development. Every adult age 50 or older should be screened for colon cancer by having a colonoscopy. With this simple procedure, precancerous polyps can be detected and cancer can essentially be prevented from spreading. Small sites can be removed surgically and sometimes treated with chemotherapy. More advanced colon cancer requires more extensive intervention through surgery, such as a colonostomy and/or chemotherapy. We are prepared to help patients at every stage of this disease with proven treatments, and by assisting them with ostomy management as needed.

Lung cancer

Self Regional is prepared to fight lung cancer aggressively with advanced procedures and state-of-the-art technology. We offer sophisticated detection and diagnostics with PET scans, and video endoscopy pinpoints cancer and allows for minimally invasive surgery.

Together with pulmonologists, respiratory therapists and other members of the medical team, our surgeons address each patient’s needs. From fighting cancer to offering advanced pain management, to helping patients with breathing difficulties, our specialists cover every aspect of cancer treatment and care.

Prostate cancer

Our highly trained specialists offer comprehensive approaches that provide all the options men need for fighting prostate cancer, including surgery, radiation therapy and cryosurgery. Early implementation of treatments such as cryosurgery, radioactive iodine seed implants and brachytherapy keeps Self Regional’s Cancer Center at the forefront of treatment.

Our team evaluates the best methods for each patient. We work actively in our community to promote prostate cancer awareness and screening because early detection is the key to successfully fighting this cancer.

Cancers of the head and neck

In the past, patients suffering from cancers in areas such as the mouth and throat were also faced with potential loss of speech and cosmetic issues. Fortunately, our specialists are extremely skilled in minimizing damage from these cancers and helping people maintain the greatest possible functionality. We call upon a team of ear, nose and throat surgeons, head and neck surgeons, radiologists, hematologists, oncologists and rehabilitation specialists, including speech therapists. The team determines the best way to treat each individual case. With the ability to provide reconstructive procedures, post-operative care and extensive rehabilitation, Self provides patients with head and neck cancers a very high level of care.

Cancers of the bladder and urinary tract

To treat cancer of the bladder and/or urinary tract with the greatest effectiveness, we utilize an array of approaches, from chemotherapy to radiation to surgery. These include the latest procedures, such as: topical chemotherapy administered in the bladder; highly targeted conformal external beam radiation; and continent urinary diversion that, in some cases, can create a neobladder and prevent reliance on an ostomy pouch when total bladder removal is required. When an ostomy is the best choice, we provide comprehensive support for these patients.
